Black owned luxury spa opens in McCalla

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A black owned spa in McCalla, possibly the only one of its kind, is looking to make a splash and bring the luxury lifestyle to the area. Owner, Lisa Brown says when you walk into their business on Pocahontas road in McCalla, you can expect a beautiful and professional atmosphere that’s welcoming for all, especially people of color. She says there, luxury is a lifestyle.

At Lisa Brown salon and spa in McCalla, owner Lisa Brown says if you can grow it, they say they can do it.

“There are other day spas in the area but they are not black owned and they’re not minority women owned,” says Brown.

Going on three weeks since opening, Brown says when you walk in her shop you’ll see a black space for all to enjoy, by a black woman.

“Normally when we come into a luxury space, it’s not designed for women of color. It’s not designed for people with texture,” says Brown.

On top of providing a luxury service, Brown says they also provide opportunities to learn, something employees like Daisy Carter and Tracy Windham say got them started.

“I graduated in 2018 from brown beauty barber school,” says Windham.

”I was Mrs. Lisa’s first relocation student. I’m all the way from Radcliff Kentucky. When I came to the school I had to join. It was awesome with the instructors and I got all the information that I needed, and they were like a family,” says Carter.

Brown says she trains her employees and her beauty and barber school in Bessemer then brings them on to work for her.

“We’re developing the next generation of beauty and barber professionals and so it was important to me to create a space that they would want to come and work, or a space that would inspire them,” says Carter.

And speaking of developing spaces, the spa is expanding into the medical field after partnering with a dermatologist and an internal medicine doctor. Brown says she wants to speak to the cause of hair loss through conditions like alopecia, a hair loss disease that mainly impacts black women.

“So we got medical professionals who will be working in our space and doing things like plasma hair replacement. The dermatologist that I partnered with is also getting her cosmetic certification,” says Brown.

Brown says the dermatologist will also be able to do botox, lip fillers, none invasive weight loss, and laser hair removal. You can expect to see her medical services being offered sometime this fall. There’s a lot more brown says she offers, like venue rentals for bridal showers or Quinceañeras, and it’s not just for the ladies. Brown says she is also bringing a barber on too for men Click here for more information.
