The death rate for Zika virus infection is low however, the risk of birth defects is higher if the infection i transferred from a pregnant woman to the unborn child.

Despite several measures undertaken by the government to curb the spread of Zika virus in Maharashtra, cases continue to rise with a total of 97. Zika infection is preventable and can also be cured however, the risk lies among pregnant women transferring the infection to the foetus which can then lead to birth defects. When the infection first started spreading this year, the aim of the health departments of Maharashtra was to take special care to protect pregnant women. So far, 3 more people tested positive for Zika infection and among them 2 are pregnant women. A total of 45 pregnant women have tested positive in Maharashtra and Pune itself has recorded 75 positive patients overall. As per the health department, the pregnant women are being closely monitored.

3 New Cases Of Zika Reported

Among the new cases that were reported on Friday, two are from Pune city and one from Yamuna Nagar in Pimpri-Chinwad. The areas that have reported the maximum Zika virus cases are Pune city, Pimpri-Chinwad, rural Pune, Kolhapur, Ahmednagar, Sangli and Solapur, as per a health official from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) of the Public Health Department, Government of Maharashtra.

Here Are Some Guidelines Stated By The Health Department Of Maharashtra And Pune

After minutely observing the exponential rise in cases pertaining to Zika virus in the state, the health department of both Pune and Maharashtra have stated these following guidelines that may help both the people and the medical facilities:

  1. Zika virus death rate is typically very low and risk is not very high. Thus, there is no need to panic, said the health department.
  2. If you have a fever, you must report to the government hospitals promptly.
  3. Government hospitals are providing the diagnosis and treatment of Zika infections free of cost.
  4. Private medical practitioners have been advised to get sample’s checked from the National Institute of Virology Pune through government system.
  5. People are advised to use mosquito nets at home to prevent getting bitten,
  6. Wear full sleeved clothes during the day.
  7. Do not create a breeding ground for mosquitoes under any circumstances.
